Tom Wilkins hosted a panel discussion to mark the start of the new Parliamentary term with The Spectator’s Political Editor, Katy Balls, and the Financial Times’ Political Editor, George Parker.
Panellists started by setting the scene, looking back at what’s already happened since 4 July, and what’s to come. They then shared insights on a range of questions from the audience.
The panel set the scene with their takes on the current political climate, what to look out for in the coming weeks, and shared their insights on the key themes shaping this Labour Government. They noted that following summer recess, activity in the House of Commons reflects a feeling of excitement, with a record number of new MPs finding their footing; something that can be felt across the broader machinery of Government.
However, with a few difficult moments for the Prime Minister arising already – the two-child benefit cap, winter fuel payment controversy and early prisoner release – it seems the honeymoon period has come to an abrupt end.
Over the next few months there will be multiple milestones for the new Government and with them come opportunities to scrutinise Keir Starmer’s political agenda and aptitude.
The Prime Minister will first attempt to use Labour Party Conference to channel focus back to more positive policy initiatives, such as planning reform, to hammer home the message that ‘Change’ has begun. 12 October will mark the end of Starmer’s pivotal first 100 days, quickly followed by the International Investment Summit on 14 October. But the real first test of Labour’s agenda will be the Budget on 30 October, with all eyes on what revenue-raising measures the Chancellor will announce.

POSTPONED
Please be aware that we have had to postpone this event that was originally planned for 11 June due to availability around the UK General Election. We will update details when we have a new date for it in due course.
The UK is already a world leader in markets such as corporate communications, PR, social media, and public affairs, but with digital technologies reshaping not just the media landscape but also the way our clients operate – and communicate – the need to anticipate the changing marketplace will be vital in ensuring we remain successful.
As corporate affairs functions continue to evolve, businesses are being asked to be more integrated than ever before in how they communicate with their external audiences. Telling a memorable story has never been more important if firms are to have the impact they desire. How they tell that story is changing rapidly.
