By-election or general election – these four seats are crucial

Following the election of four Irish TDs from across the political spectrum to the European Parliament in May, a series of by-elections to replace them are scheduled to occur on Friday 29th of November. The results of these by-elections are unlikely to affect the legislative arithmetic in the present Dáil – Fine Gael will continue to govern at the convenience of Fianna Fáil until such a time as either side is audacious enough to spark a general election.

This political Mexican standoff is unlikely to end immediately, however, as neither side wants to be regarded as responsible for plunging the country into the sort of political chaos that has become so commonplace across the Irish sea. Before Brexit is sorted, for either side to trigger an election campaign would be regarded as incompetent and self-serving, and so would be costly politically…
