British Vehicle & Rental Leasing Association (BVRLA) – Developing and promoting a counter-terrorism strategy

Public Affairs

In 2017, the UK witnessed three terror attacks involving ‘vehicles as weapons’, with each incident involving a rented vehicle. We were brought in to help the BVRLA formulate an effective industry response to the London terror attacks in 2017 and to proactively engage with counter-terrorism and national security stakeholders.

Strategy and execution

We partnered with the Institute for Counter Radicalisation and Security Studies, King’s College, London – the leading think tank for counter-terrorism – to draft a threat assessment and set of recommendations for industry and policymakers.

Dr Shiraz Maher, Director of the International Centre for the Study of Radicalisation and an internationally respected authority on Islamist terrorism, spoke for a video we produced for the BVRLA’s annual conference to raise awareness about the challenge ahead for its members and the security services.

We hosted an event chaired by Labour’s Neil Coyle MP, Chair of the APPG for Counter-Extremism, in the House of Commons for senior-level counter-terrorism, national security and motor industry stakeholders.

We also provided strategic and messaging advice for the BVRLA and how it should position itself within the national debate on counter-terrorism.

Successfully positioned the BVRLA as a proactive trade body that prioritises public safety amongst senior level stakeholders in Westminster and Whitehall.

Our work also provided the BVRLA with a road map for handling this issue going forward.
